The Art of Lin Souliere CSPWC, SCA

Picture
Reflected Light SOLD
Lin works primarily in watercolour and oils, but some days you will find her in her pottery studio slamming clay about. A great stress reducer! She has a curiosity to investigate other media  but always returns to her painting. Watercolour allows her to achieve the transparent glow of colour and light that she loves. Her compositions, whether of a landscape or figure, big sky or shoreline, are based on solid abstract qualities that make for strong design and form.
She studied art first at the Beal Special Art Program in London, Ont. Hired right away into the field of illustration, she later returned to studying fine art at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont.
She worked in art illustration for 20 years before leaving that career and opening her own art gallery in Stratford, Ont, called the Turquoise Dolphin. Then in 1997, she and her artist-husband Carl Bell, bought property on the Bruce Peninsula, built a home, and moved there permanently. They live there year round and have their studio and gallery, Dragonfly Ridge Studio. Lin teaches watercolour workshops there and continues to paint and work in art. The gallery is open to the public by chance from May to Thanksgiving.  You can also see more of Lin's work at the Bruce Peninsula Artists Coop Gallery in Ferndale (corner of Hwy # 6 and Ferndale Road, just west of Lion's Head) .

Primordial Mound, watercolour 22x30in, c 2010 SOLD
Many of my watercolours begin with a pouring technique. I mix 5 very saturated colours in small jars and then after wetting the Arches paper, I pour the colours and manipulate them to give me the inner glow I want. The the image is finished in the traditional method of brush and paint.  There is a sample to the right of a poured beginning.

My studio is a place of serenity and calm. It can also be a place where chaos reigns! If Im in the mood to paint then the brushes fly and things can get a bit messed up. But the light coming in the windows is always so beautiful, and the scenery just outside the windows is of a forest that is peaceful and quiet.

And this November, I was feeling like painting something totally different so my 2 dogs, Holly and Brinkley, became my subjects. I also switched to acrylic on canvas for these, most are 6x6in.

Solitary Witness - Words and oxide drawing on handbuilt stoneware bowl by Lin Souliere
Picture
Hand painted clay tiles, glazed and fired.
And when I need a break from painting, I move out to my pottery studio.  I work mainly with hand building vessels that I can then paint with oxides and stains.

Slamming around some clay is a great way to get my mind uncluttered. These examples are handbuilt stoneware. I carve into the leather hard clay and add slips and oxides.
